How to Choose Between the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and the 2024 CX-90

If you are in the market for a new larger SUV, you might have noticed that Mazda has two new models that are very similar on the surface. Indeed, the 2025 CX-70 and the CX-90 share the same architecture and most of their design work, but there are some key differences that make them stand out from one another. Here is a look at these differences.

Passenger Capacity

The main aspect that differentiates the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is passenger capacity. Indeed, the large CX-90 benefits from three rows of seats that can allow it to carry up to eight passengers in some trim levels. Other versions of the CX-90 offer different seating configurations that can accommodate six or seven passengers in comfort. On the other hand, the slightly smaller CX-70 is only available with two rows of seats, making it capable of seating up to five. While this smaller passenger capacity can make the CX-70 less practical for large families, it also makes it ideal for drivers who need a large SUV that can carry lots of cargo and up to five passengers in comfort.

Differences in trim

Another way to tell the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and the 2024 Mazda CX-90 apart is by looking at their exterior and interior trim elements. Indeed, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 uses its slightly smaller size to present a more dynamic appearance than the CX-90, which focuses more on elegance and luxury. This means that you can expect to see gloss black exterior accents and an available red leather interior on the CX-70, and chrome accents as well as an available white interior in the CX-90. Alloy wheel designs are also distinct between both models, further reinforcing their individual characters.

Differences in pricing

By looking carefully at the pricing structure for both models, you will see that the 2025 Mazda CX-70 is slightly more affordable than the larger CX-90 when similarly equipped, but that is not the full story. Indeed, the CX-90 offers the entry-level GS trim level, which is not available on the CX-70. This means that despite its larger passenger capacity and top-of-the-line status, the CX-90 has a lower starting price than the CX-70, by about $4,000.

The same powertrains

No matter which model you choose, you will benefit from the latest powertrains developed by Mazda. This is because both the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and the 2024 CX-90 share the same engines and transmissions. Standard is a new 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that uses a mild-hybrid system to offer 280 horsepower and a low fuel consumption. Higher trim levels of both models benefit from a high-output version of this powertrain, which delivers 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. If you would prefer an even more fuel-efficient option, both the CX-90 and CX-70 can be ordered with a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine with a large hybrid battery to offer 323 horsepower and up to 42 kilometres of electric range.
