10 Tips to Help Prepare Your Mazda for Summer

Good preparation is the key to enjoy stress-free summer holidays, and getting your Mazda ready to face the warmer months ahead of time is a great way to ensure no unexpected problems arise when you are ready to hit the road later this year. Here are 10 tips you can either do yourself or ask our service department to perform for you:

1- Inspect the Cooling System

The cooling system is crucial for preventing your Mazda’s engine from overheating, especially during hot summer months. Check the radiator for any leaks or corrosion, and ensure it's filled with the proper coolant mixture. Also, inspect hoses and belts for signs of wear or cracks, as these components are vital for coolant circulation.

2- Check the Air Conditioning System

A properly functioning air conditioning system is essential for staying cool and comfortable during summer drives. Test your A/C to ensure it’s blowing cold air, and if it's not, have it serviced by professionals, such as our qualified technicians. This may involve recharging refrigerant levels or repairing any leaks in the system.

3- Inspect the Brake System

Obviously, your brakes are critical for safety, so it's essential to ensure they're in good condition. Check brake pads for wear and tear, examine rotors for any signs of damage, and ensure brake fluid levels are sufficient. If you notice any issues, such as squeaking or grinding noises when braking, have your brakes inspected and serviced promptly. This is important to do after each winter since salt and grim can cause rust to build up on the different parts of the system, reducing their effectiveness over time.

4- Check Tire Pressure and Tread

Hot weather can affect tire pressure, leading to underinflation or overinflation, which can impact handling and fuel efficiency, in addition to causing abnormal tire wear. Regularly check tire pressure and adjust it to the manufacturer's recommended levels, shown on a placard in the front door opening or in your owner’s manual. Also, inspect tire tread depth since it allows the water to escape from under the tire during rain storms, thus preventing your Mazda from aquaplaning.

5- Change the Oil and the Oil Filter

Engine oil plays a crucial role in lubricating and protecting engine components, especially during summer when temperatures are higher. Change your oil and oil filter according to the manufacturer's recommendations, or have our service department take care of it for you. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule is very important to ensure your vehicle remains in good working order for years to come, especially if your Mazda is equipped with a turbocharged engine since those require clean oil to function properly.

6- Test the Battery

High temperatures can accelerate battery degradation and reduce its lifespan. Have your battery tested to ensure it's holding a charge and replace it if it's old or showing signs of weakness. Additionally, check battery terminals for corrosion and clean them if necessary to ensure a good electrical connection.

7- Inspect your Wiper Blades

Summer thunderstorms can cause sudden downpours, reducing visibility on the road. Inspect your wiper blades for any signs of damage or wear, such as cracks or streaking. Replace worn-out wiper blades to maintain clear visibility during inclement weather. Don’t forget the rear wiper if your Mazda has one.

8- Clean and Wax the Exterior

Protect your Mazda's paint from the sun's harmful UV rays and summer elements by washing and waxing it regularly. This helps preserve the paint finish, prevent oxidation, and maintain the vehicle's overall appearance. In addition, performing a deep spring clean helps to get rid of any salt or winter grime that might still be stuck in crevices and hard to reach areas around your Mazda.

9- Inspect Belts and Hoses

Belts and hoses play crucial roles in various systems, such as the cooling system, air conditioning, the charging system, and power steering. Inspect them for signs of wear, cracks, or fraying, and replace any damaged components to prevent potential breakdowns while driving.

10- Stock an Emergency Kit

Always be prepared for unexpected roadside emergencies by keeping an emergency kit in your Mazda. Include essentials such as water, non-perishable snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables, a first aid kit, and any other items you may need in case of a breakdown or accident. Being prepared can provide peace of mind and ensure your safety during summer travels.

As you can see, there are many things you can do yourself to ensure your Mazda vehicle will be ready to hit the open road in time for summer vacations. For the more complex tasks, you can schedule an appointment with our service department at your convenience!
