More Details About the Upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is just about to be officially unveiled as the latest addition to the automaker’s vast lineup of modern SUVs. Here are some of the things we know just ahead of its public debut.

Powertrains shared with the CX-90

While few details are known about the future 2025 Mazda CX-70, it has been confirmed that this model will share its powertrains with the larger CX-90, which became the top-of-the-line model in the automakers' range of models. This means that we can expect to see the new 3.3L turbocharged inline-six engine in the CX-70, as well as the 2.5L plug-in hybrid. Specifications for the powertrains in the CX-70 have not been announced, but according to what we see in the CX-90, the first engine could produce up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque depending on the trim levels.

In the case of the plug-in hybrid option, the powertrain generates 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when installed in the CX-90, which results in an all-electric range of up to 42 kilometres. Since the CX-70 is expected to be somewhat smaller and lighter, it should offer a longer electric range than the CX-90.

A five-seat version of the CX-90

Essentially, we expect the upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70 to be a shorter version of the current CX-90 with only two rows of seats good for up to five occupants. As the CX-90 is only offered in a three-row configuration that can welcome from six to eight passengers, there is currently a void in the Mazda lineup for buyers who want a large two-row SUV that is bigger than the CX-5 or CX-50 while not being as large as the CX-90. Unsurprisingly, this close relationship between both models is likely to result in the CX-70 looking quite similar to the CX-90. This is not bad news at all considering that the CX-90 is a handsome interpretation of the latest brand image from Mazda and another key step in its strategy to offer more premium models than its competitors in the mass-market price category.

The same level of luxury as the CX-90

Thanks to this close proximity with the CX-90, we also expect the upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70 to be one of the most luxurious vehicles in its class, especially in the Signature trim level. Offered in the CX-5 and the CX-90, this version of Mazda SUVs uses high-quality materials, fine craftsmanship, and advanced technologies to distinguish itself from lower trim levels and competitors. For example, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 Signature comes equipped with features such as Nappa leather upholstery, stitched textile panels on the dashboard, real wood trim, and the full complement of on-board technologies offered by Mazda. While we still don’t know if a Signature version of the CX-70 will be announced, we can expect that such a model would benefit from almost all of the same features as in the CX-90.
