Mazda will Adopt the NACS Connector for its Electric Vehicles

Mazda Canada has announced that all of its upcoming EVs starting in 2025 will be compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Here’s what this means.

What is NACS?

The North American Charging Standard is a high-voltage connector developed by Tesla which can be used to charge electric vehicles at home and public fast charging stations. This connector will replace the current CCS standard used in all non-Tesla electric vehicles in North America starting in 2025 for most automakers, including Mazda. You can easily tell both connectors apart since the CCS unit is round with two large charging pins added below in the case of fast chargers, while the NACS connector is smaller and features two metal pins in the upper corners.

What are the advantages of switching to NACS?

By switching to the NACS connector, Mazda will allow its future EV buyers to take advantage of its numerous benefits over the current CCS standard. For example, future Mazda electric vehicles will be able to charge at any of the more than 15,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across North America, making it easier to travel long distances with an EV. In addition, the NACS connector is smaller than the CCS one, and so is its electrical cord, which makes it easier to manoeuvre, especially in winter.

What this means for Mazda EV drivers

Buyers of future Mazda models powered by electricity will benefit from more freedom of movement with their vehicle since they will be able to use the largest and one of the most reliable EV charging networks in North America. Since most other automakers are also adopting the North American Charging Network in a similar timeframe, this means that almost all new EV charging stations that will be built in the coming years will be equipped with the NACS connector, further increasing charging options for Mazda EV drivers.

Still committed to the “Joy of Driving”

While Mazda has partnered with Tesla to have access to its charging network, the two companies will remain completely separate in terms of vehicle development. This means that you can expect all of the upcoming Mazda electric models to embody the brand’s core values, such as human-centric designs and driver enjoyment. While few details are available at the moment on the subject of future electric vehicles, you can rest assured Mazda will have an appealing lineup of electrified models to offer by the end of the decade.
